(UPDATED) DJI Mini 2 Troubleshooting (Why, How to Fix)

DJI Mini 2 is an advanced drone of DJI’s Mavic Series. When I was scrolling in DJI forums I found that many DJI Mini 2 users have encountered different problems with DJI Mini 2. Most of the problems are so common to almost every drone and I also have faced them.

So I decided to go through DJI forums to collect almost all the problems people have with Mini 2 and answer them with my experience and research in one simple article. In this article, you would be able to figure out how to solve almost every problem you have with your DJI Mini 2.

Common Problems With DJI Mavic Mini 2.

We would be talking about the following common problems regarding DJI Mavic Mini 2. Also, I would put the detailed article link to each problem for further troubleshooting.

  • Problem 1: DJI Mini 2 not taking off.
  • Problem 2: DJI Mini 2 not turning on.
  • Problem 3: DJI Mini 2 not stable.
  • Problem 4: DJI Mini 2 not connecting to the controller.
  • Problem 5: DJI Mini 2 keeps disconnecting.
  • Problem 6: DJI Mini 2 not connecting to phone.
  • Problem 7: DJI Mini 2 not calibrating.
  • Problem 8: DJI Mini 2 GPS not working.

Problem 1: DJI Mini 2 not taking off.

Usually, DJI Mavic Mini 2 refuses due to IMU & compass miscalibration, unlike Mavic Mini 2 aircraft, DJI battery issues, and no-fly zones. Besides that, if your Mavic Mini 2 won’t take off even though propellers are spinning at sufficient speed, you have definitely installed propellers in the wrong pattern.

Solutions.

  • Link the Mavic Mini 2 aircraft with the controller if the aircraft indicators keep blinking LEDs yellow once it is turned.
  • Calibrate Mini 2 IMU and Compass. Miscalibrated IMU or compass could cause crashes and serious damage to the aircraft. So when the Mavic Mini 2 detects miscalibrated IMU or compass it would refuse to take off. Read How to Calibrate IMU and compass.
  • Update Mini 2 Firmware.
  • Install propellers in the proper pattern. If you have installed propellers in a different pattern, the aircraft won’t be able to take off or it would flip at the takeoff.
  • Check whether you are in a Geofenced area. The Mavic Mini 2 won’t take off until you unlock the geofenced area. You can unlock the Geofenced areas by following the steps and giving the required information that the DJI Fly app prompts.

Problem 2: DJI Mini 2 not turning on.

Most of the time DJI Mini 2 won’t turn on because of DJI intelligent battery’s different reactions to the current environment. For instance, if you left your Mini 2 Aircraft or its battery in a closed place on a hot day the battery temperature would rise up. So once the intelligent battery detects high temperature it temporarily shuts down to save itself from the damage. Other than that damaged battery or battery firmware glitches also could be the issue.

Solutions.

  • If the Mini 2 battery is warm, leave it in an open area to cool. DJI Intelligent battery refuses to turn on if its temperature is above 86°F ( 30°C ).
  • If you are in a cold area give some minutes to warm up the battery.
  • Kick the battery out from hibernation mode. If the battery indicator LEDs are solid red once it is turned on and stay the same after connecting to the charger, the Mini 2 battery might have gone into hibernation mode. So turn on the battery and wait until the solid red light goes out. Then connect the battery to the charger and leave the battery to come out from hibernation mode.

Problem 3: DJI Mini 2 not stable.

The biggest reason why DJI Mavic Mini 2 won’t stay still and is not stable is miscalibrated Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), or the compass. Besides that reason, Electromagnetic interference, malfunctioning motors, and distorted propellers can unstable the DJI Mini 2.

Solutions.

  • Avoid Electromagnetic interference. Electromagnetic interference could affect the components of the DJI Mini 2 aircraft and radio signals which lead to unstable flight.
  • Calibrate DJI Mini 2 IMU & Compass. The key element of stable flight of the DJI drone is its IMU and compass. So it’s essential to calibrate them properly for stable flight. Read How to Calibrate DJI Mini 2 IMU & Compass.
  • Check Mini 2’s propellers. Check whether you have installed Mini 2 propellers in the right pattern. Also, check whether a propeller is distorted. if they are distorted it’s better to replace the whole propeller set with a new set of Mini 2 propellers.
  • Update Mini 2 Firmware.

Problem 4: DJI Mini 2 not connecting to the controller.

Most of the time, DJI Mini 2 won’t connect to the controller if the aircraft or controller’s firmware is outdated or the aircraft is unlinked to the controller. Other than that, If the aircraft and controller have different firmware on them, they are unable to connect together. Also, don’t forget to keep the Mini 2 aircraft and controllers battery charge at sufficient level. Because low battery power could the same issue.

Solutions.

  • If the DJI Mini 2 aircraft indicator LEDs blink yellow, link the Mini 2 controller and aircraft. Open the DJI Fly App and go to the camera view. Then click on the three dots at the top right corner and go to the control section. Scroll all the way down and click “Connect to Aircraft”. Then hold the aircraft power button for approximately four seconds. Once both are linked, the camera view would be displayed on the screen.
  • Charge DJI Mini 2 aircraft and remote controller batteries fully or to a sufficient level.
  • If you replaced the Mini 2 controller or the aircraft you need to pair them first.
  • Check whether both DJI Mini 2 aircraft and controller are in the same firmware. This fact is directly addressed by the DJI. So definitely keep the controller and aircraft in the same firmware.

Problem 5: DJI Mini 2 keeps disconnecting.

Usually, the Mavic Mini 2 would keep disconnecting from the controller because of crowded or poor signals, high levels of electromagnetic interference, and low battery power in the Mini 2 aircraft or the controller. Other than that, firmware issues or outdated firmware could become the reason.

Solutions.

  • Charge the Mini 2 Aircraft and controller battery full for a stronger connection. This would look like not helping the issue, but it does. Charging both drone’s and the controller’s will definitely certify a stronger connection. At least charge them above 50% before flying the drone. Also keep your phone battery levels sufficient.
  • Up the frequency of radio signals. Upper-frequency channels are less crowded and transfer data fast. Open the DJI Fly app and go to the “Wifi Settings” section of the app. Change channel mode 2.4 GHz to upper frequency.
  • Face sides of antennas toward the aircraft instead of its head.
  • Update Mini 2 Firmware. The firmware of the drone as a software, manages many drone’s actions. That firmware keep updating day to day by fixing previous bugs and unlocking latest features. So if you have an old version of firmware in your drone it might not be valid with present updates.
  • Avoid high levels of electromagnetic interference. Electromagnetic interference can cause losing the connection between the drone and the controller. Especially near the power lines and power towers. You can expect this kind of situation when flying in urban areas where the many power lines are carried through. That’s why you are always advised to fly the drone in open wide areas.
  • Factory reset the controller and drone. Because the current controller or drone settings could cause this issue, it’s better to reset the controller and drone settings to the default settings by factory resetting the controller and drone.

Problem 6: DJI Mini 2 not connecting to phone.

Most of the time, DJI Mavic Mini 2 is unable to connect to the phone because of issues with aircraft wifi connection, mobile device wireless connection, and DJI Fly mobile application. Also if you are using an incompatible device with the DJI Fly app it might be the reason.

Solutions.

  • Update the DJI Fly app. Go to the DJI Downloads center and download and install the latest version.
  • Reset the Mini 2 aircraft. Resetting the Mini 2 would help with fixing glitched settings on the Mini 2 aircraft. To reset the Mini 2, hold down the power button for 9 seconds until you hear three beeps.
  • Update DJI Mini 2 Firmware.

Problem 7: DJI Mini 2 not calibrating.

If the DJI Mini 2 not calibrating and keeps failing the process, the aircraft might be surrounded by electromagnetic interferences. So if you are calibrating the Mini 2 indoors bring it outdoors away from powerlines, communication towers, huge buildings, or any electromagnetic interferences. Also, leave all electronic stuff away from the aircraft while calibrating the Mini 2.

Solutions.

  • Charge the DJI Mini 2 fully or to a sufficient level before calibration. When the system detects low battery power it would refuse the calibration process.
  • Try to calibrate in an open area.
  • Calibrate the DJI Mini 2 on a flat surface. If you are attempting to calibrate the drone on an uneven surface it will lead to calibration failure or faulty calibration results.
  • Update Mini 2 Firmware if you have outdated firmware.

Problem 8: DJI Mini 2 GPS not working.

Poor internet connection, outdated Mini 2 firmware, outdated DJI Fly app, and environmental interferences are the most common reasons why DJI Mini 2 GPS not working.

Solutions.

  • Update the DJI Mini 2 firmware.
  • Update the DJI Fly app or uninstall the application and install it again. If you have the latest DJI Fly app try clearing DJI Fly cache data and app data.
  • Calibrate the Mini 2’s IMU and compass. Read How to Calibrate DJI Mini 2 IMU & Compass.
  • Factory reset Mini 2 and the controller. Factory resetting the DJI Mini 2 will erase all the current network settings and put them back to default settings. So if current network settings cause the issue, resetting the drone and controller fix that.
  • Upgrade the GPS module. If your Mini 2 GPS module is damaged or glitched you would have to send contact DJI to repair or upgrade it.

Problem 9: DJI Mini 2 not charging.

As I found, the most common reason why DJI Mini 2 not charging is higher or lower input amperage or voltage to the battery. Other than that, outdated DJI battery firmware, damaged battery cells, hibernation mode, and warm batteries could cause the same issue. Also, it’s worth checking whether the charger is broken or faulty.

Solutions.

  • Plug the charger into a power outlet with the required voltage and current. Usually, the DJI battery charger required input voltage is around 100 – 240 V and the amperage is 1.4 A.
  • If the DJI Mini 2 battery is warm, leave it for a few minutes in an airflow to cool. 
  • If the battery has gone into hibernation mode, kick the Battery out from hibernation mode. You can determine whether the battery has gone into hibernation mode by inspecting its behavior once it is turned on. If it’s in the hibernation mode, the indicator LEDs would be solid red and will be the same even after connecting to the charger. Turn on the Mini 2 battery and wait until the solid red light goes out. Then connect the battery to the charger and plug it. Then leave the battery for a few hours and the battery would come out from hibernation mode.
  • Check whether the charger is Faulty or broken. Measure the output voltage and amperage of the charger and check whether it satisfies 12V 1.5 A / 9V 2A / 5V 3A.
  • Update DJI Mavic Mini 2 battery Firmware. When updating firmware be sure to insert the battery with the issue. because the firmware updating process would solve the bugs in the battery.
  • Replace the Mini 2 battery if the cells are damaged, swollen or it reached 300 – 500 charging cycles.

Problem 10: DJI Mini 2 controller keeps beeping.

DJI Mini 2 controller’s beeping sound is so common when the controller detects some issues like faulty battery, low battery, or disconnected from the aircraft. But it becomes an issue when the user is unable to figure out what was meant by the controller’s beep code. The miscalibrated joysticks issue and controller glitches are the most common issues that make users confused about why DJI Mini 2 controller keeps beeping for no reason.

Solutions.

  • Calibrate the controller sticks. Launch the DJI Fly app and connect the aircraft and turn off the drone. Go to the controller settings and tap remote calibration. Tap calibration and move virtual joysticks 100% to every direction. Then click finish and turn off the controller.
  • Update Firmware of the remote controller.
  • Reset the remote controller.

Problem 11: DJI Mini 2 not recording video.

Most of the time, DJI Mini 2 is unable to record video because of SD card space partition issues, an invalid file system, outdated firmware or firmware bugs, and Viruses & Malware.

Solutions.

  • Repair the SD card using Windows Command Prompt. Connect the SD card to the PC using an adaptor and open the command prompt. Then type “chkdsk” and leave a space and specify the SD card driver letter (Ex: chkdsk D). and hit enter. After that, you’ll have to wait patiently until the process is done. Once the process is finished, your SD card should be fixed and ready to go.

  • Format the SD card.
  • Update DJI Mini 2 Firmware.

Problem 12: DJI Mini 2 not recognizing SD card.

If your SD card is not formatted in the “FAT32” or is incompatible with the DJI Mini 2, the DJI Mini 2 would refuse to recognize the SD card. Besides that, firmware issues, malware, and corrupted SD cards also cause for unknown SD cards.

Solutions.

  • Check whether the SD card is compatible with Mavic Mini. Visit the DJI Mini 2 Product page and check whether your SD card is listed under the supported SD cards field.
  • Repair the SD card using Windows Command Prompt. Connect the SD card to the PC using an adaptor and open the command prompt. Then type “chkdsk” and leave a space and specify the SD card driver letter (Ex: chkdsk D). and hit enter. After that, you’ll have to wait patiently until the process is done. Once the process is finished, your SD card should be fixed and ready to go.
  • Format the SD card.
  • Scan the SD card using antivirus software.
