(UPDATED) DJI FPV Troubleshooting (Why, How to Fix)

DJI FPV drone is the DJI’s one and only FPV drone which has specific DJI features that other FPV drones don’t have. Also, it’s so flexible for beginners with FPV drones. Therefore many FPV drone enthusiasts especially those who are new to FPV drones love the DJI FPV drone.

When using a drone, especially something with advanced technology, it’s quite normal to face some issues and problems here and there. When I was searching on DJI forums, there were some common problems asked about DJI FPV drones.

Common Problems With DJI FPV.

  • Problem 1: DJI FPV not taking off.
  • Problem 2: DJI FPV won’t turn on.
  • Problem 3: DJI FPV not bound to phone.
  • Problem 4: DJI FPV not activating.
  • Problem 5: DJI FPV not reading SD card.
  • Problem 6: DJI FPV controller beeping.
  • Problem 7: DJI FPV battery not charging
  • Problem 8: DJI FPV controller not charging
  • Problem 9: DJI FPV not recording.
  • Problem 10: DJI FPV controller not connecting.
  • Problem 11: DJI FPV controller sticks not working.

Problem 1: DJI FPV not taking off.

In most cases, the DJI FPV drone won’t take off when propellers are installed in the wrong pattern to the aircraft. Usually, this happens because DJI offers two sets of propellers, and people confuse which set to use and end up installing just one set of propellers. So check whether you have installed propellers in the correct pattern.

Solution.

  • Install propellers in the correct pattern. As I mentioned before DJI offers two sets of propellers. So people think that one set is a spare set of propellers. But actually, those sets are different propellers with spare two propellers. So you need both sets of propellers for installation.

One set of propellers has orange marks around its hole. So, inspect the rotors with orange marking and install those propellers in that rotors. Propellers with no orange marking around the hole need to be installed in other rotors. Just like that, your problem will be solved.

Problem 2: DJI FPV won’t turn on.

In most cases, DJI FPV refuses to turn on when its battery detects harmful temperatures and environments and keeps the battery safe. For instance, I have heard a story about a DJI FPV user who faced this issue after leaving the aircraft inside the car because closed warm areas increase the temperature of the battery and when the intelligent battery detects that, it temporarily shuts down to stop the damage to the battery. Other than that, hibernation mode, battery glitches, and firmware issues also could cause this issue.

Solutions.

  • If the DJI FPV’s battery is warm take it out and let it cool. Once it is back to the proper temperature, it would turn on.
  • If you are in a frigid area or winter season, give it a few minutes to warm up.
  • Check whether the battery is in hibernation mode. DJI intelligent battery goes into hibernation mode when it’s stored for a long period of time. The main symptom that indicates your battery has gone into hibernation mode is the solid red battery indicator which won’t disappear even though you connect the battery to the charger. To kick the battery out from the hibernation mode take the battery out and turn it on and wait until the red light disappear. Then plug the battery into the charger and let it take the time to get out from the hibernation mode and get charged.
  • Update DJI FPV battery firmware. Update DJI FPV firmware while keeping the battery inside. Read how to update DJI drone firmware.

Problem 3: DJI FPV not bound to the phone.

This is a huge problem most DJI FPV users face and the main reason why DJI FPV not bounding to the phone is DJI Fly app glitches. When you are unable to bind your phone you have a limited range of flying. Therefore it’s so important to bind the phone no to fly the FPV free. Follow the below steps to solve the problem.

  1. Delete all the cache data of the DJI Fly App.
  2. Log out from your DJI account and uninstall the DJI Fly app.
  3. Make a dummy DJI account.
  4. Then install the DJI Fly app again and log in with your dummy account.
  5. Go outside and turn on the DJI FPV, controller, and goggles and wait until the satellites are connected.
  6. Then connect your goggles to your phone. Now you see your phone is bound to the aircraft.
  7. Clear all the cache data again.
  8. Log out from the DJI account, DJI Fly app and uninstall the app.
  9. Turn off the Aircraft, controller, and goggles.
  10. Install the DJI Fly app again. This time log in to your original account.
  11. Turn on the Aircraft, controller, and goggles again and wait until satellites are connected. Then connect your phone to the goggles.
  12. You’ll see the problem is solved.

Problem 4: DJI FPV not activating.

Most DJI FPV drone users were unable to activate the DJI FPV unit because of confusion about the proper way of doing that and the Outdated DJI Fly app. Especially, Android users face this issue because of installing an outdated DJI Fly app on Playstore.

Solution.

  1. Download the DJI Fly app from the DJI Download Center. If you are an ios user, you can download the DJI Fly app from the Appstore. But if you are an android user, visit the DJI download center and download the DJI Fly app apk file to your device and install it.
  2. Once you installed the latest DJI Fly app, follow the proper instructions from DJI to activate the DJI Fly drone.

Problem 5: DJI FPV not reading SD card.

In most cases, DJI FPV not reading or recognizing SD card because of SD card glitches such as incompatible SD cards, invalid SD card formats (other formats from “FAT32”), malware, and corrupted SD cards. Besides them outdated DJI FPV firmware also becomes a reason for this DJI FPV issue.

Solutions.

  • Check whether your SD card is compatible with the DJI FPV. Read the detailed article about DJI FPV SD cards from my fellow Droneblog.
  • Repair the SD card using the Windows command prompt. Connect the SD card to the PC and open the command prompt. Then type “chkdsk” and leave a space and specify the SD card driver letter (Ex: chkdsk D). and hit enter. Once the process is done the sd card is repaired.
  • Format the SD card. Formatting SD card would help with clearing faulty settings and format on your SD card. Be sure to have a backup before formatting.
  • Scan the SD card using Antivirus Program.
  • Update DJI FPV Firmware.

Problem 6: DJI FPV controller keeps beeping.

Usually, the DJI FPV controller keeps beeping when it detects a faulty controller, low battery, and when it is disconnected from the controller. But I found that many DJI FPV users were confused and unable to figure out why the controller keeps beeping when it beeps because of the miscalibrated controller or controller glitch.

Solutions.

  • Calibrate the controller. Launch the DJI Fly app and connect the aircraft and turn off the drone. Go to the controller settings and tap remote calibration. Then you will notice virtual joysticks on the screen are not centered. Tap calibration and move virtual joysticks 100% to every direction. Then click finish and turn off the controller.
  • Update Firmware of the remote controller.
  • Reset the remote controller. If nothing worked reset the controller to clear the all faulty settings and back to default settings.

Problem 7: DJI FPV not recording.

Usually, DJI FPV won’t be able to record video because of SD card issues such as invalid SD card format, malware, and damaged or corrupted SD card. Other than that, firmware issues or outdated firmware also could be caused by the DJI FPV aircraft.

Solutions.

  • Format the SD Card in FAT32 using MiniTool Partition Wizard. Read the detailed article to know how to format and perform disk partitions using MiniTool Partition Wizard software. Also, you can try formatting the SD card on your PC.
  • Update DJI FPV Firmware.
  • Repair the SD card using the Windows command prompt. Connect the SD card to the PC and open the command prompt. Then type “chkdsk” and leave a space and specify the SD card driver letter (Ex: chkdsk D). and hit enter. Once the process is done the sd card is repaired.
  • Scan the SD card using antivirus software.

Problem 8: DJI FPV battery not charging

In most cases, the DJI FPV battery refuses to get charged when it detects insufficient/ higher voltage and amperage, improper battery temperature, and faulty charger or faulty battery. Besides them, outdated firmware and hibernation mode also could cause charging issues.

Solutions.

  • Plug the charger into a power outlet with the sufficient voltage and amperage. Usually, the DJI battery charger voltage is around 100 – 240 V and the amperage is 1.4 A.
  • Check whether the charger is Faulty or broken. Check whether the output amperage and voltage match the required amperage and voltage.
  • If the DJI FPV’s battery is hot, leave it an airflow or open place to cool.
  • Check whether the battery is in hibernation mode. If the drone battery flashes solid red even if you connected it to the charger, that means it has gone into hibernation mode. Unplug it from the charger and turn on the battery and wait until the red LED goes away. Then plug it into the charger and leave it for a few hours to come out from the hibernation mode and get charged.
  • Update FPV Battery Firmware. Insert the battery into the FPV aircraft and upgrade the firmware.
  • Replace the battery if you notice some damage or swelling. Because those situations are so dangerous and harmful to the aircraft. Also, it’s better to replace the battery after 300-500 full charging cycles.

Problem 9: DJI FPV controller not charging.

As I found, Many DJI FPV users face this issue because of providing low current or voltage to the controller for charging.

  • Start by using the supplied power brick to charge the controller. The USB-C connector on a Mac may not be able to supply the current required to charge the controllers.

Problem 10: DJI FPV controller not connecting.

Most of the time, DJI FPV refuses to connect the controller because of insufficient battery power, outdated/ glitched firmware, and unpaired DJI FPV aircraft. Also if your DJI FPV aircraft and controller have different firmware installed on them it also causes this problem. Because when the controller and aircraft have different firmware on them they refuse to pair or connect to each other.

Solutions.

  • If the DJI FPV aircraft indicator LEDs keep blinking yellow, once it is turned on, pair/link the aircraft to the controller. Press and hold the aircraft power button for five seconds until there is a beeping noise. The battery LEDs would start to blink in sequence. Then press and hold the controller power button for five seconds until the controller indicator LEDs start to blink in sequence. Wait until aircraft battery LEDs are solid and display battery level. Once you reached that you are linked the FPV aircraft to the controller successfully.
  • If you replaced the DJI FPV controller or aircraft you need to pair them first.
  • Upgrade the DJI FPV aircraft and controller firmware to an equal version. It’s essential to keep both controller and aircraft firmware in an equal version to connect each other.
  • Update DJI FPV Firmware. Read how to update DJI FPV firmware.
  • Charge DJI FPV aircraft and remote controller battery to a sufficient level before the flight. Low battery is an issue when it comes to dealing radio signals between aircraft and controller.
