DJI Smart Controller Errors Troubleshooting (Why, How to Fix)

DJI Smart Controller is made for Mavic 2 or any other aircraft equipped with OcuSync 2.0 to maximize the experience and ease the control. Many users love it because it has intuitive controls and pre-installed features and is so advanced compared to common remote controllers.

Anyway, these days I saw some people suffering from some common issues with the DJI smart controller and asking for solutions in DJI forums and other posts on social media. Most of them are so common for DJI remote controllers and some errors are not. So I thought it would be so helpful if there is an article covering all common DJI smart controller errors and how to fix them. So here I am after researching those errors and writing this article.

Common DJI Smart Controller Errors.

  • Error 1: DJI Smart Controller is won’t turn on/ DJI Smart Controller is not working.
  • Error 2: DJI Smart Controller is stuck and won’t turn off.
  • Error 3: DJI Smart Controller not charging.
  • Error 4: DJI Smart Controller is not connecting to wifi.
  • Error 5: DJI Smart Controller is not updating.
  • Error 6: DJI Smart Controller is not recognizing sd card.

Error 1: DJI Smart Controller is won’t turn on/ DJI Smart Controller is not working.

Usually, DJI smart controller won’t turn on because of firmware issues and glitches. Also, the smart controller’s battery might have drained and gone into hibernation mode. Follow the below steps to turn on the smart controller and fix the issue.

  • Power on the battery and connect to the charger. Then give it a couple of hours and it would come out from hibernation mode and get charged if the battery has gone into hibernation mode. Sometimes it would take more than a couple of hours, so be patient. Once it is fully charged, check whether the smart controller turns on.
  • Update DJI Smart Controller. Power on the smart controller and connect to the internet. Then click on the settings icon and enter system settings and scroll down. Tap System Update. Then the system will automatically check for firmware updates. Tap “Update”. Then wait until the firmware is downloaded and installed. Once it has been done, the DJI Smart Controller will automatically restart.
  • Connect to the charger with a working cable while holding the power button down for 15 seconds and the custom button underneath. By using this button in combination with connecting to the charger, boot up the smart controller and start charging normally and also it has worked with users to fix the issue.

Error 2: DJI Smart Controller is stuck and won’t turn off.

If your DJI smart controller is stuck in the DJI logo screen or black screen you won’t be able to turn off the smart controller. So to power off the smart controller, you have to use forced shutdown. To force shutdown, keep pressing Flight Pause Button, press once then press again the Power button, and hold it down to force to turn off the RC.

Error 3: DJI Smart Controller not charging.

In most cases, DJI smart controller won’t get charged when it has gone into hibernation mode. Hibernation mode is designed to protect the battery from get drained when it’s left for the long term. Besides, that battery software issues, and unsupported cable or brick.

  • Check the charger works fine. The smart controller gets charged when the input satisfies 12 V (Voltage) and 2 A (Amperage). So inspect the input of the charger. If the charger is faulty, try using another smart controller charger.
  • Change the power brick. You might keep using incompatible brick.
  • Update DJI Smart Controller. Updating the smart controller would refresh the battery’s firmware too. Turn on the smart controller and connect to the internet. Enter system settings and scroll down. Tap System Update and it would check for firmware updates. Then tap “Update” and wait until the firmware is downloaded and installed. After that the controller would reboot.
  • Kick the battery out from hibernation mode. As I said before if you left the battery/smart controller for a long term, the battery would go into hibernation to protect from the damage of the power drain. To get the battery out from hibernation mode, you don’t need to do extra, you just need to have patience. Power on the battery and connect to the charger and leave it for a few hours to get out of hibernation mode and get charged.

Error 4: DJI Smart Controller is not connecting to wifi.

DJI Smart controller wifi connection issue is the major problem that many people faced. In most cases, DJI smart controller wifi issue is caused by the improper security mode of the connection. Plus some devices are struggling to connect to WiFi hotspots with authentication set to WPA2 personal encryption AES only.

  • Change the security mode of your modem from “WPA2 PSK” to “WPA+WPA2 PSK” to fix the DJI Smart controller wifi connection issue.

Error 5: DJI Smart Controller is not updating.

Most of the time, DJI smart controller refuses to get updated because of faulty settings. If your DJI smart controller is not updating, follow the below process to solve the issue.

  • Enter the homepage of the Smart Controller > File Manager.
  • Then delete the “pro.fw.sig” file in the Internal Storage-0-encrypt folder.
  • Then restart the controller.
  • After deleting that file it’s time to update the smart controller properly.
  • Connect the smart controller to the internet.
  • Click on the settings icon and enter the settings list and scroll down.
  • Tap System Update and wait until it checks firmware update.
  • Then tap “Update” and wait until the firmware is downloaded and installed.

If you are still unable to update the smart controller, factory reset the smart controller and try again the firmware update process.

  • Power on the controller and open the preferred DJI app. Then locate the button title “ME”.  
  • Press the button and enter the information screen.  
  • After that, press the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner and then “clear cache”. 
  • clear the cache data and sign out.
  • Then enter the settings menu.
  • Scroll down on the settings menu and hit Factory Data Reset.
  • Then confirm the Factory Data Reset.
  • After factory resetting the SC, give it another try on a firmware update.

Error 6: DJI Smart Controller is not recognizing sd card.

In most cases, the DJI smart controller is unable to recognize SD cards because of using incompatible SD cards, faulty settings, and software issues. Follow the below steps to fix the SD card recognition issue.

  • Check whether you are using a compatible micro SD card. DJI smart controller supports microSD cards with a capacity of up to 128 GB and R/W speed up to UHS-I Speed Grade 3.
  • Insert the SD card well into the SD card slot on the controller.
  • Update the Smart controller. I have explained how to update DJI smart controller in the above section.
  • Format the SD card. the formatting SD card would clear all the faulty settings including the file system and fix the issue. Users have been able to fix this issue by formatting the SD card. Insert the SD card into an adaptor and connect it to a PC. Then enter the file explore and right-click on the SD drive. Choose the format and wait until it’s formatted. Then put it back into the SD card slot, and check whether it’s detected.
  • Replace the SD card. If the SD card is still unrecognized, it might have been damaged. So buy a new compatible SD card and try inserting that.
