(FIXED) DJI Motion Controller Not Charging (Why, How to Fix)

So you got the DJI motion controller with your DJI Avata or DJI FPV. Then you connect it to its 30W charger but you don’t see any sign of charging. Is it charging? Absolutely not. Many DJI FPV and DJI Avata users are asking for solutions for this issue on many forums (DJI forums) and social media.

After researching this issue, I was able to figure out why the DJI motion controller not charging and how to fix it. Then I thought it would be helpful if there is an article addressing this DJI motion controller charging issue. So I brought all the good info about why the DJI motion controller not charging and how to fix it into this simple article. Hope this would help DJI motion controller users who struggle with this issue.

Why DJI motion controller not charging?

In most cases, the DJI motion controller won’t charge because of the DJI motion controller’s chargers (USB-C to USB-C) issue. Many users were able to fix the DJI motion controller not charging issue after replacing the USB-C charger with the USB-A to USB-C cable. Besides that, a faulty DJI motion controller or charger also could cause the issue.

1. DJI motion controller charger (USB-C to USB-C) issue.

This is the main reason for the issue in many cases. I think the USB-C to USB-C cable is not capable of providing the required power to the DJI motion controller charging.

2. Insufficient voltage and amperage for the DJI motion controller.

DJI motion controller charger requires 5V of voltage and 1A/2A of amperage to charge the motion controller properly. So if you have connected to any power source that couldn’t provide sufficient voltage and amperage, the DJI motion controller won’t charge.

3. Incompatible charging block.

If you have connected the motion controller charging cable to an incompatible charging block that outputs insufficient power, the motion controller won’t charge.

4. Faulty/damaged DJI motion controller charger.

If your DJI motion controller’s charger is faulty or damaged it won’t charge the DJI motion controller. Because it won’t supply any power or sufficient power. We need to contact DJI to repair or replace the faulty/damaged DJI motion controller charger. We have talked about how to contact DJI to repair your DJI drone in a separate article.

How to fix DJI motion controller not charging.

Let’s check what the steps you can take to fix the DJI motion controller charging issue are.

Step1: (Big Success Rate) Replace the cable with USB-A to USB-C cable.

  • Replace the default DJI motion controller charging cable (which is a USB-C to USB-C cable) with the USB-A to USB-C cable. Many users were able to fix this issue after replacing the USB-C to USB-C cable with USB-A to USB-C cable.

Try Using a USB-A to USB-C Cable Instead Of the USB-C to USB-C cable.
  • You can use any standard charging block to connect the USB-A side of the cable.
  • Then connect the USB-C side to the motion controller and power the charger on.
  • Most of the time, this step might troubleshoot the motion controller charging issue. because many users faced the same issue and troubleshot it following this step.
  • If you are still facing the issue, keep following the below steps.

Step 2: Check whether the USB-C charging cable is faulty.

  • In this step, we would check the amperage of the DJI motion controller’s USB-c cable and check whether it’s faulty.
  • Install the Ampere app on from Playstore to your phone.

  • Then check whether the phone is charging.
  • Give a few seconds to the app to measure the supplying amperage. If it’s 1000mA-2000mA the charging cable is working fine.

Step 3: Plug the charging block into a different power outlet.

  • Instead of plugging the charger into power sources like power banks, plug the charger into a proper wall outlet.
  • If you have already tried plugging the charger into a wall power outlet, try plugging the charger into a different power outlet.

Step 4: Replace the charger block.

  • If you have different USB-C and USB-A charging blocks, bring them, and let’s try all of them.
  • Use the DJI motion controller default USB-C charging cable and connect to different USB-C charging blocks and check whether it works.
  • If you have USB-A to USB-C cable you can try a USB-A charging block as well. Connect the USB-A side of the cable to the charging block and connect the USB-C side to the motion controller.
  • If you were able to troubleshoot the issue by replacing the charging block, use that charging block as the charging block for the motion controller.

Step 5: Contact DJI.

If you are still struggling with the same issue, there must be something wrong with the hardware of the motion controller, motion controller battery, or charger. So we need support from DJI to figure out the issue and repair it. Also, you have to send the motion controller and the charging unit to them for analyzing the issue and fixing or replacing the faulty components.
