Cinewhoop Drones (What Are They, Features, Uses, Pros & Cons)

Cinewhoop drones are becoming so popular every day and the “Cinewhoop drone” term also is spreading through the internet crazy. Most of the epic indoor drone shots you see on the internet are captured by these Cinewhoop drones. These Cinewhoop drones can capture close proximity shots and more safe indoor flight.

Because of these capabilities of Cinewhoop drones, they are loved by beginners to experts and even have become an inspiration for designing some latest drones such as DJI Avata. So in this article, we will talk more about what Cinewhoop drones are, their features, uses, and much more.

What are Cinewhoop drones?

Cinewhoop drones are first-person-view drones that are designed to fly around soft objects such as people, animals, and properties safely while capturing cinematic footage. Pilots fly these drones, with wearing a set of video goggles so they can see the view from the drone’s perspective in real time.

The Cinewhoop terms came from the “Cinematic” and “Tinywhoop” phrases. Because of this design drones are capable of capturing cinematic shots and were inspired by the Tiny whoop drone design, these drones are called Cinewhoop drones.

How did Cinewhoop become popular?

As I mentioned above, the Tinywhoop drone which was released by Team Big, was a huge inspiration for designing Cinewhoop drones. Tiny whoop drone is a mini drone with ducts protecting propellers and can fly through small spaces safely. But because it is very small, it was struggling with capturing HD footage in those days. (Definitely not capable of carrying full-size GoPro.)

Then Paul Nurkkala collaborated with Andy Shen who owns Shendrones and came out with Squirt V2 which is the first proper Cinewhoop drone, which is a little bit larger than Tinywhoop but with a similar design and capable of carrying a full-size GoPro.

Because Cinewhoop drones have ducted propellers, it was safer to fly around soft objects. And it can fly long-range thanks to the crossfire receiver. (crossfire is a popular radio control system for long-range FPV drones). Because Cinewhoop gave some sort of ability and freedom to pilots, they were able to capture single-take uncut cinematic shots and they went viral on the internet. It caused to create huge hype among the drone community on Cinewhoop drones.

Features Of Cinewhoop Drones.

Cinewhoops mainly differ from other types of drones because of their features such as ducted propellers, lightweight and small size.

1. Ducted Propellers.

The main feature that differentiates the Cinewhoop from the rest is the ducted propellers. These ducted propellers make it safer to fly near objects and boost the thrust. However ducted propellers cause loudness of Cinewhoop drones and sometimes lose control in quick movements. That’s why Cinewhoop drones are not suitable for freestyle flying. They are designed for capturing slow, smooth controlled cinematic shots

2. Smaller and lighter than 5-inch FPVs.

Cinewhoop drones are lighter, small, and safer than your 5-inch, 7inch drones. So Cinewhoop drones can fly through spaces safely that 5-inch FPV drones can’t fit or are risky to fly.

3. Long-range flight.

Because Cinewhoop drones are usually built with crossfire receivers, they can fly long-range (usually 4km) with no problem. This feature became a huge advantage for Cinewhoop drones to create single-take long-range shots as below.

4. Underpowered than 5-inch FPVs.

Cinewhoop drones are not as powerful as 5-inch FPV drones. It has a low thrust-to-weight ratio which is usually 1:3. So they are not fast and do not fit with fast movements. The reason is the purpose of designing Cinewhoop drones is to create a small aircraft that can just capture smooth, slow-controlled cinematic shots, not to create another small FPV.

5. A stable station for full-size GoPro.

Cinewhoop drones need to be considered as a mini moving aerial stable station for full-size GoPro. Actually, that’s the whole point of the Cinewhoop drone which is capturing slow and smooth cinematic shots that other FPVs can’t capture.

6. Limited acrobatically.

As I mentioned above, Cinewhoop drones are underpowered, Therefore it’s not capable of extreme ends of maneuvers like barrel rolls, and split s maneuvers as powerful 5-inch, 7-inch FPVs do.

Uses of Cinewhoop Drones.

Cinewhoop drone is a huge practical application in the cinematography and advertising industry because, with Cinewhoop drones, pilots are confident and comfortable with capturing risky, creative, and attractive shots which are highly targeted in those industries.

1. To Capture single-take cinematic shots.

Most of the time, Cinewhoop drones are used to capture cinematic indoor-outdoor shots close to objects or people because there is a low risk of hurting somebody or damaging property when flying near the object. These types of single-take cinematic shots taken from Cinewhoop drones are everywhere on social media. I’m sure you have definitely seen this type of short movies while scrolling through Instagram.

2. To Create Product/ Real-estate Advertisements.

Cinewhoop drones are heavily used in the advertising industry to create attractive and eye-catching advertisements with creative shots around the object or through objects. These types of Cinewhoop drone shots are so common in Automobile advertisements and Real estate advertisements these days, which amazingly catch the audience’s attention.

3. Cinematography.

Because of the low risk of damage, Cinewhoop drones are used in cinematography for dynamic close shots near actors and objects, which are so risky with regular cinematic drones.

4. Professional aerial videography/ photography.

Because Cinewhoops is specially built as an aerial stable station for high-quality sports and action cameras like GoPro, You can capture high-quality aerial footage and images using Cinewhoop drones.

Cinewhoop’s Pros

  • Safety. Because ducted propellers of Cinewhoop drones, It’s safer to fly even indoors compared to regular drones.
  • Small to fit through gaps. Cinewhoop drones can fly through small spaces, that 5-inch, 7-inch, or any other cinematic drones can’t.
  • Confident and comfortable flying near objects. As Cinewhoop drone propellers are protected, pilots are comfortable and satisfied with Cinewhoop drones flying close to things even people.
  • Generally cheaper. Cinewhoop built cost varies from 200 – 400$. (The cost can go high according to the GoPro you prefer).
  • Freedom to creativity. Because of the Cinewhoop drone’s features such as low-risk and long-range flight, pilots can create creative single-take shots close and through to different without any cut or transition. These kinds of clips are so prevalent on social media, especially on Instagram.
  • Capture amazing long-range single-take shots. Because Cinewhoop drones are built with a Crossfire receiver, they can fly long-range and capture close shots with different objects which are located in different places.

Cinewhoop’s Cons

  • Cinewhoop drones are so loud. Ducted propellers make Cinewhoop drones louder than other drones. So if you fly a Cinewhoop drone near people for a long period of time, they might get annoyed.
  • Cinewhoops aren’t designed for freestyle flying. Cinewhoops aren’t capable of extreme ends of maneuvers like barrel rolls, split s maneuvers, etc. Even some quick turns also could crank the Cinewhoop drone sideways and lose control. So Cinewhoop drones need to be considered for slow and controlled shots.
